Procreatin’ in the Van

Procreatin’ in the Van

Wait, what?! No way! Seriously, I am kidding. Yes, I live in a van (a very nice van). My partner, cat and I have been full-time on the road for over a year now. Needless to say, this was on my bucket list for a long time. As is the way with life sometimes, though, it happened at an odd and unplanned moment. If I said that it happened after the pandemic wrought its destruction upon our lives, and left it at that, you’d probably have a great idea of what I meant. It’s not that we couldn’t afford to live anywhere, it’s that we wanted to move, but didn’t know where … well, besides Europe. So, off we went to travel around the US looking for a new home.

I am a painter and have closets full of art supplies - now in storage. Obviously, I couldn’t take them with me. Not even watercolors, because I was afraid they would ruin our water system. And markers just won’t cut it for real work. Nor could I bring my desktop computer or scanner with me, as space constraints exist.

So, I have been working on my iPad with the Procreate app, or I should say I am trying to learn the Procreate app. I’d be nowhere with this task if I didn’t already know Photoshop. But this also poses a problem as well. Things are a little different in Procreate.

For instance, here are four pieces I created that I can’t use at all:

Why, you ask? Because Procreate defaults its color space to P3 (which nobody has ever heard of) and is only good for online viewing, certainly not for printing. And I did not know that!

Oh well, live and learn, right? Anyway, the good news is that Procreate is an amazing app that lets you create art without supplies. All I need is my iPad. It’s very portable, very easy, and very exciting. Although I don’t think I will attempt to recreate these four pieces, stay tuned because I will be sharing a lot more art on this blog.
